"hundreds of pages of writing.... written in order for me to hear my own voice on the page." Oh my Tonys, that is why I paint, to see my own voice. Thank you for this wonderful essay.

Thanks, Tabby. I'm so glad you know what that means. I think the need is something integral to art, or just to being human, which is maybe the same thing. Art is a way to explain, even just to ourselves, what it feels like to be our particular human self, with a particular voice and experiences and perspectives. No one else can paint that for you, or can write what your thoughts are, which makes the painting and the writing necessary.
