I love reading 19th century home -making manuals and have a large collection...but I don't have Wharton s. Thank you for this fun article, with information and instruction still useful today!

Thanks, Kathryn! Wharton's whole book is really a joy to read. It was difficult to choose which section to highlight.

Fun to read and consider how making our homes comfy is a timeless concern.

And I now feel better about our daughter’s old bedroom which now has simple bookcases, stacked books everywhere and many lamps.

My library !

No question, a home library is the HEIGHT of timeless style. That room will never, ever go out of fashion.

Thanks, Connie! I adore your image of the kids furiously competing to re-create her rooms in cacoa. She would be so confounded and, almost definitely, disgruntled by EVERYTHING in American homes today. I'd love to watch her rip through all the home design reality shows. She would have to admit that our furniture is a lot more comfortable, though...
