Before we look over the last month’s work, let me start by saying THANK YOU!

Seriously, thank you. By reading this post and the other pieces we’ve published in the past month, you make a big impact. Juke is a more interesting page because you’re here. It’d be quiet and boring without you.

If you are already a paid subscriber, you get an extra boatload of thanks. Substack is built on the idea that creative work is worth paying for, and that art CAN thrive in an online environment without cascading pop-ups and mid-scroll ads. We love publishing on a clean canvas. We think it makes for better reading. And it’s only possible because we don’t have to chase advertising dollars.

If you’re one of our new free subscribers, you get a “thank you” too! It means you’re reading and that’s huge. We want as many readers as we can find. You’re a part of our community and we hope you’re having a good time here. If you like what you read, please consider sharing some of Juke’s pieces with your nearest and dearest.

(Now for the hard sell)

If you enjoy what you find here AND can afford it, please think about signing up for a monthly paid subscription. Subscriptions are $6 per month or else $60 for a year

Here is where I get to talk about the theory of relativity and how six bucks is actually pretty cheap. I could even pull the old “one cup of coffee” trope out of my pocket, but I love coffee and I have bought plenty of other dumb stuff for six bucks. Stuff like…

  • Movie rentals where I stopped watching after thirty minutes, then scrolled through my phone instead.

  • Magazines from the airport news stand that fill five minutes of page-flipping flight time. (Am I crazy or did magazines have text in them before? Am I wrong about that?)

  • Shirts from a thrift store that were A GREAT DEAL until I tried them on at home and immediately threw them back into the “donate” pile.

  • HORRIBLE, disappointing grocery store sandwiches (always with that one sad, wilted leaf of lettuce.)

  • And so, so many more things. But enough about my problems…

Instead of blowing your dough on all that stuff, please consider directing your pocket change to support a few writers you enjoy reading. The money goes directly to the contributors. We are a guiltless pleasure, savory and sweet (occasionally a little salty), and we would never cling in the wrong places.

Now let’s get to the fun part. We’ve published ten fresh new stories on Juke in the past month. If you missed any of them, keep scrolling for a few of the month’s highlights. Then visit the homepage for any others you’ve missed.

And PLEASE keep reading and sharing us with your friends. We love a wide audience!

Stay tuned, everybody. The next post rolls off the presses on Friday…

Just Yesterday
I woke up this morning, a Saturday, wondering where I had put my journal. My intention was to assemble notes I had made while in Oslo a couple of weeks ago, or maybe it was three weeks ago. For years, a journal has been part of my kit, part of my everyday carry, like reading glasses or a pen or whatever book I happen to be reading. Often I have found mys…

Breakfast with Myrna
I have spent most of my life on the Great Plains, a region full of stories that rarely filter to the outside world. In one of those towns, at one time, I knew a woman named Myrna (not her real name.) She and I had breakfast one morning in a local café and she told me a story I’ll never forget. This is Myrna’s story…

The Yellow Awnings of New York
We used to have more delis in New York City. Delis and bodegas. I differentiate between the two, although some people do not. The bodegas serve the more Puerto Rican and Dominican neighborhoods. We also used to have - here in the city and in Yonkers, where I grew up - Italian delis, Jewish delis, and German delis. We may have even had Irish delis, but …

Signal to Noise Report
The Signal to Noise Report collects headlines to illustrate humanity’s move into what is beginning to resemble a hybrid species: The Jetsons meets Blade Runner. The idea being that we have a proclivity to accept (with glee) whatever new techno gizmos are shoved at us, yet rarely question their purpose and/or their long-term effects on our health and san…
