more has to be said. Mrs. Mellersh-Wilkins and Mrs. Arbuthnot, a mouthful. Finding the exact right spaces and pauses is part of the punch. The slow acknowledgement of the two women for the other’s misery. The wisdom of Nerves about Arbuthnot's lack of nerves, as in being stymied. Blocked even more than Mrs. Wilkins though God lives in Arbuthnot's kitchen, too. Women in the grinder. Wow. Those fixed states. At least Wilkins denounces her unhappiness and that is a victory. Gutenberg on my way. Thanks for this one, Tonya. Almost politic, but not today. Constance

I'm so happy you got so much out of it! I think you'll really love the whole book. I devoured it in one day last week and just felt I had to share it with everybody. It's a little dated, no doubt--there's redemption for absolutely everybody, whether they've earned it or not--but it was still such a pleasure to read.

“Think of getting away for a whole month—from everything—to heaven—”

Where there is the loveliest garden still, able to bloom, roses and all. And grass too for bare feet. We need precious literature and its lingering views. Thanks for this, Tonya.
