For a long time, I lived through YouTube nomads, dreaming of the day that I could wander the West in a van. Um ... I think I'm over it. Your piece nailed the coffin on that idea.

"Home is wherever you are too tired to keep on driving" is a genius lead-in to a soulful snapshot of road life. Rowdy applause, Paul!

Sage advice. And it's true, to boot.

I did read this in Exit Culture. Nice writing. Reminded me of a friend, a well known novelist, now passed, who could afford any place anywhere but when on a book signing slog liked staying at cheap motels. He had two standards: The neon sign had to say Color TV and the place had to have at least a D rating. Hell, the Bates Motel had a C. There is a place in the Death Valley area where you spray yourself down with Deet 100, put on a gas mask, lay on the bed and pray for sunrise.

Good stuff, Paul

"pray for sunrise."

true. but sometimes, just pray for sleep. If the sunrise comes, all the better.

thanks for this, Doc.

those simple little motels are so much more inviting than the corporate ones with the bad art on the walls that cost a whole lot every night. The small independent ones are often very clean and very sweet.
