I love your story about The Lariat and wish it was still there. Fallon's an interesting town. While reading your Fallon bit here, I remembered checking out of the Best Western and said to the Shoshone woman desk clerk, "we've been here for three days and it's time to go home and feed the dog." Without skipping a beat, she calmly said, "yeah, he's probably getting hungry by now." It always cracks me up to remember her. Even as I write this.

Thanks, Sue. I will always have a soft spot for Fallon because it was the first town I stayed in on my first trip ever across Nevada. It felt like a different galaxy out there - and it still does. My only gripe is that I can never find good food out there and always end up at the supermarket, but I think we found a cool little cafe/sandwich place last time through - the Courtyard Cafe and Bakery. They were nice as can be and especially to the four-legged fuzzy guy we had with us. I'm looking forward to going back there. Past few years, I stayed at the Motel 6. Oh man, maybe the last 15 years. One of the only decent Motel 6s left that I know of. But I may look around for something different next time.

True, good food stops at the Nevada border, unless you go to the big casinos. CVI in Minden, Katie's, is pretty good and it's fun to watch the waitstaff do their thing. But out in the rurals, you're smart to go to the grocery store and make your own. I think I now what little cafe/bakery you're taking about. At least I think it's in Fallon. It may be in Yerington. Now how can I get those two towns mixed up. Jesus, Paul!

Ahh, yes...I remember this piece with great specificity & fondness. Your eye for visual/verbal detail is stunning! & your line "As always, the word “Kitchenettes” makes me happy"...makes me happy. I love a kitchenette (or a dinette) in any context.

Here in Cincinnati we have a great sign museum. American Sign Museumhttps://share.google/hle0tuk5JKoBlAgmU. True it's not the same as making your way to those places yourself, but I if you're ever in Cincy...

Thanks, Jodie! I appreciate anybody who is trying to preserve these artifacts.

It is a great story, Paul. And such fine, perfectly set photographs. Great description, sense of place, always the road, and in this story, I love the blue-eyed elder with his sense of order and cleanlinesss who allowed in Elko who probably hadn't spent a night inside for far too long. The motel sign photos are not something I would ever have dreamed of coming to find heavenly, as in otherworldly, but at this point, it would be hard not to be transported by them. Mostly I'm a subway ride away from the whole world. Not far from home. Still, the train gets me to the woods, parks, and shores, and occasionally to a great motel sign at night. I look at them differently now, with deference. Thanks for your gifts, Paul. C.

Thanks, Connie, for this high praise and for your thoughts. I have ruminated for a long time on this and truly think that you can also see the whole world without ever leaving New York City. Some might disagree, but I think you know what I mean. xoxox

Thank you, Sebastian. The feeling is truly mutual. Tonya just told me to drop whatever I'm doing and read your latest.
