I'm excited to share an excerpt today from Stops Along the Way, a new collaboration from painter Tabby Ivy and writer Damon Falke. This particular poem, “In Motion, Still” and the painting “Among the Trees” appear with eight other pairings in a new booklet, available to purchase here, which is being released in conjunction with the exhibition Stops Along the Way – Tabby Ivy and Damon Falke at The 2one3 in Carlton, Oregon. If you're nearby, the exhibit opens next Friday, September 5th, with a reception from 4-7pm.
I was so honored when Tabby and Damon asked me to write a short preface for this new work. I'm sharing some of that preface here, in hopes that my words, along with this short taste of the booklet, will send you straight to the website to purchase your own copy:
“Six years ago, Damon wrote to me about the ‘lovely, lovely painter’ whose work would inspire a series of new essays. He sent me examples of her paintings, and I was enchanted by the quality of air and the haze of atmosphere. I had often enjoyed the sense, in Damon’s work, that he was speaking to an unseen listener. His words reach out in search of a response. When I read Between Artists, I saw how that quality created such intimacy between his essays and her paintings, how Tabby’s hand seemed to respond to Damon’s words, and how his thoughts were reflected in her fields and forests.
It’s been extraordinary, reading Stops Along the Way, to see that collaboration deepen. There’s such a receptivity between Damon and Tabby, a willingness to be changed by the other…”

IN MOTION, STILL
After so much life and so much else, You search for a turnout on the edge Of a forest where a trail begins, a path. Although you do not walk them anymore, You stop anyway. You feel glad the path is here, This way into a forest that winds through The trees and brightens at night when The moon or a fox lies down in the blue-white light of where you and our stories began.
Stops Along the Way is the second collaboration between Tabby Ivy and Damon Falke, a writer, poet and playwright living in the far north of Norway. Their first collaboration resulted in the 2022 exhibition and book, Between Artists: Life in Paintings and Prose.
The exhibition opens at The 2one3 in Carlton, Oregon with a reception from 4-7pm on Friday, September 5th and runs through November 1st, 2025.
